World Poultry Congress in Brisbane, Australiay
(June 30th – July 4th, 2008)

Around 2.500 people from all over the world came to Brisbane to attend the World Poultry Congress 2008. Although it was winter, the participants were attired by the mild climate in Brisbane with temperatures around 23°C.

A typical congress day started with three keynote speakers, followed by 10 breakout sessions, with 15- and 30-minute presentations. The participants had some difficult choices to make due to the great variety of important talks being presented. The participants could also enjoy the expo hall, with over 220 exhibitors. This was by far the largest poultry expo ever held in Australia. BIOMIN actively participated in both, the scientific program and the exhibition.

Ralph Stonerock from BIOMIN US presented very successful results obtained with Biomin®PoultryStar on counteracting necrotic enteritis in the US. Gerd Schatzmayr, Head of the BIOMIN Research Center gave a 30-minute presentation on BIOMINs research activities in the field of mycotoxin deactivation. Dr. Kostas Mountzouris from the Agricultural University of Athens gave an introductory talk on probiotics with a special focus on his experience with Biomin®PoultryStar. In addition, several posters on BIOMIN research topics were presented. Friday, the final day of the congress, started with the keynote speakers, which included Gordon Butland speaking on the influence of China on the global livestock industry, and trying to predict what that influence will be over the next twenty years.

Finally, congress chairman Dr. Pym, after having declared the event a success and thanking all of those who made it possible, passed the baton (in this case the WPSA flag) to Dr. Edir Silva of Brazil, who will chair the 24th World’s Poultry Congress in Salvador (Bahia), Brazil in 2012. Dr. Silva invited all those present to reunite in four years in Brazil for another exciting event.
