Poultry Science Association (PSA) – Meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina, US

Around 800 people attended the PSA meeting in Raleigh, which was hosted by the North Carolina State University. This was the largest number of participants at a PSA meeting since 2002. Attendees came from 35 countries and 27% from outside the US, showing that the PSA meeting has evolved to a quite international event. 453 abstracts had been submitted and were presented either as oral presentation (241) or as posters (211). Besides the scientific program participants also could enjoy some social side events like the North Carolina-style BBQ or the PSA Fun Run, which included some challenges for those not used to the hills of North Carolina. Despite this difficult precondition Anja Ganner from the BIOMIN Research Center secured the excellent 3rd place after 2 male colleagues from Spain and the US.

This year the Informal Nutrition Symposium, co-organized and chaired by Mamduh Sifri from ADM, was one of the most interesting meetings during the PSA meeting. Besides Dr. Humphery (California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA), Dr. Richards (USDA/ARS, Beltsville, MD) and Dr. Classen (University of Saskatchewan, SK, Canada) Dr. Todd Applegate from the Purdue University talked about his expertise on directly fed microbials and on the experience he gained during his B.R.A.I.N. funded sabbatical at the BIOMIN Research Center in Austria.

In total BIOMIN employees authored or co-authored more than 15 contributions at this PSA meeting, most of them resulting from BRAIN projects with Texas A&M University, Purdue University BOKU University, IFA-Tulln or the University of Missouri.

Next year the PSA meeting will take place again in conjunction with the ADSA/ASAS meeting in Denver, Colorado (July, 11th to July, 14th 2010).
